Udaipur, Jaipur or Jodhpur: Which City Suits Your Destination Wedding?

Udaipur, Jaipur and Jodhpur are Rajasthan's three main wedding cities, and each suits a different kind of wedding. Udaipur is built around its lakes, Jaipur has the widest choice of palaces and large resorts, and Jodhpur pairs the blue city and Mehrangarh Fort with some of the biggest lawns in the state. For families flying in from the USA, UK, Canada, the Gulf, Australia or Singapore, the airport and visa rules matter as much as the view. This guide compares the three on the points that decide the choice.

Getting overseas guests there: the e-Visa airport rule

Guests on an Indian e-Visa (most US, UK, Canadian, Australian and Singaporean citizens without an OCI card) must enter India through a designated airport. Jaipur is on the list; Udaipur and Jodhpur are not. That means:

  • Jaipur: guests can fly in directly where a route exists (Jaipur has direct flights from Dubai), or connect through Delhi or Mumbai.
  • Udaipur and Jodhpur: e-Visa guests land in Delhi, Mumbai or Jaipur first, clear immigration, and take a domestic flight on.

Jaipur is also a 4–5 hour drive from Delhi, which helps when flights are full in peak season. Apply for the e-Visa online at least 4 days, and no more than 120 days, before arrival; OCI cardholders and Indian passport holders need no visa. Our guides for the USA, UK and Canada cover the rest of the guest paperwork.

Which city for your guest count

  • 50–100 guests: all three work. Udaipur's small lake palaces (Shiv Niwas Palace 36 rooms, RAAS Devigarh 39, Taj Fateh Prakash 65) and Jaipur's heritage palaces (Samode Palace 43, Raffles Jaipur 50, Rambagh Palace 78) are often booked exclusively. In Jodhpur, Ajit Bhawan (65 rooms) and Umaid Bhawan Palace (71) suit an intimate heritage wedding.
  • 150–300 guests staying on site: Jaipur and Udaipur have the large resorts: in Jaipur, Fairmont, Taj Amer and Hyatt Regency (245 rooms each); in Udaipur, Fairmont Udaipur (327), Radisson Blu (244) and The Ananta (243). Jodhpur's largest hotel has 98 rooms, so bigger lists stay across two hotels.
  • 500+ guests or a very large reception: Jodhpur's Welcomhotel Mandore Lawn (up to 3,000 guests) and the 1,000-guest lawns at Mementos by ITC Hotels in Jaipur and ITC Mementos in Udaipur; in Udaipur, also Fairmont Udaipur or a two-venue plan across the lake.

Best months in each city

October to March is the season in all three: cool evenings for outdoor functions. Jodhpur's desert brings extreme heat from April to June. Udaipur and Jaipur are hot then but cheaper, and July to September is monsoon in all three, with the lowest rates and functions under cover. In 2027 the muhurat calendar has no Hindu wedding dates from August to October; the October–March window holds 46 of the year's 95 dates (see Hindu wedding dates 2027).

What each city costs

IWP plans to the same four all-inclusive bands in every city: Intimate (50–100 guests) from about US$105,000 (?1 crore); Premium (150–250) US$315,000–525,000 (?3–5 crore); Royal (300–500) US$725,000–1.05 million (?7–10 crore); Ultra-luxe (500+ or a buyout) US$1.05 million+ (?10 crore+). Within a band, the venue type moves the number more than the city: a large resort is usually lower per guest than a heritage palace booked exclusively, and the room block is the biggest single line. See our Indian destination wedding cost guide.

Our verdict

  • Choose Udaipur if the lakes are the reason, and you want either one private resort or an exclusive small palace.
  • Choose Jaipur for the widest venue choice, the most rooms under one roof, and the easiest arrival for e-Visa guests.
  • Choose Jodhpur for the fort-and-blue-city setting, a very large reception, or a desert sangeet at Khimsar Fort & Dunes.

Comparing beyond Rajasthan? See Goa for a beach wedding, or Jaisalmer for the desert.

Udaipur, Jaipur or Jodhpur: questions we are asked most

Which is better for a destination wedding, Udaipur or Jaipur?

Udaipur for lake palaces and one-resort weddings; Jaipur for the widest choice (28 open wedding hotels on IWP against Udaipur's 17), more large resorts and easier arrival for overseas guests, because Jaipur is an e-Visa entry airport and Udaipur is not.

Can overseas guests on an e-Visa fly straight into Udaipur or Jodhpur?

No. Neither is a designated e-Visa entry airport. Guests enter India at Delhi, Mumbai or Jaipur and take a domestic flight on. Jaipur is a designated e-Visa airport.

Which Rajasthan city can host the largest wedding?

Jodhpur: the Welcomhotel by ITC Hotels Mandore Lawn takes up to 3,000 guests. In Jaipur, the lawn at Mementos by ITC Hotels takes up to 1,000 guests; in Udaipur, the Frangipani Lawn at ITC Mementos takes up to 1,000.

Is Jodhpur cheaper than Udaipur for a wedding?

IWP uses the same budget bands in all three cities, from about US$105,000 (?1 crore) for 50 to 100 guests. The venue type and room block move the cost more than the city.

When is the best time for a wedding in Rajasthan?

October to March in Udaipur, Jaipur and Jodhpur. In 2027 there are no Hindu wedding dates from August to October.
