How to Plan a Destination Wedding in India in 2027: A Complete Guide for Indian and NRI Couples

How to Plan a Destination Wedding in India in 2027

Most couples start with a photo. A lake palace at sunset, a fort lit up for the sangeet, a mandap on the sand. That is a good place to start, but the photo is the easy part.

What actually decides how your wedding feels is the part nobody posts. How 200 guests get from the airport to their rooms. Whether the sangeet can carry on past 10 pm. Whether the hotel will let your own decorator in. Who is on the ground when your flight from London lands at 2 am.

We have planned more than 250 weddings across 13 destinations over the last 13 years, working out of Jaipur and Mumbai. This guide is close to what we walk couples through on the first call: choosing a destination, real 2027 budgets, venues, timelines, and the extra steps for NRI and international couples.

The short version

1. Agree on guest count, number of days and a budget ceiling before you look at venues.

2. Pick a destination your guests can actually reach, not just the one that photographs best.

3. Check 2027 muhurat dates early. The best venues on popular dates go first.

4. Lock the venue and room block 10 to 12 months out for a large wedding.

5. Hire a planner who has worked in that exact city, ideally at that exact venue.

1. Start With Three Numbers: Guests, Days and Budget

Before you open a single venue brochure, sit down with both families and agree on three things.

  • Guest count. A rough number is enough: 80, 150 or 300. It immediately rules venues in or out. Samode Palace near Jaipur has 43 rooms. The Leela Palace Jaipur has 190. Both are beautiful, but only one can sleep most of a 250-guest wedding under one roof.

  • Days and functions. Two days usually covers haldi or mehendi plus the wedding. Three to four days adds a welcome dinner, sangeet, reception or after-party. Every extra day is another night of rooms for every guest you are hosting.

  • Budget ceiling. Include rooms, food, décor, transfers and taxes, not just the venue fee.

Style comes next: royal, temple-traditional, beach, jungle, or small and private. We put it after the numbers on purpose, because the numbers will quietly rule out half the options anyway.

From our planning desk: the line item that surprises couples most is rooms. On a three-day wedding, guest accommodation is usually one of the two or three biggest costs. Decide early whom you are hosting and for how many nights. It changes the budget more than any décor decision.

2. Choose a Destination That Works for Your Guests

Every destination below can host a stunning wedding. What separates them is logistics: flights, room capacity, season and local rules. Here is how they compare.

Destination Getting there Best months Good to know
Jaipur International airport (JAI) Oct to Mar Widest range of palace hotels and large resorts; easiest for big guest lists
Udaipur Domestic airport (UDR); most international guests connect via Delhi or Mumbai Oct to Mar Lake and island venues often need boat transfers, which limits guest movement and timings
Jodhpur Domestic airport (JDH) Oct to Feb Fort and palace venues; check access and timing limits for evening functions
Pushkar Kishangarh airport (about 30 km) or Jaipur (about 145 km) Oct to Feb A holy town: no meat or alcohol within town limits. Avoid Pushkar Fair dates
Ranthambore Jaipur airport (about 180 km) or train to Sawai Madhopur Oct to Apr Jungle resorts are smaller, so big lists spill across properties. Core safari zones close in the monsoon
Jaisalmer Small airport (JSA) with limited flights; many guests fly to Jodhpur (about 285 km) Nov to Feb Golden fort city and dunes; desert camps and luxury tents; nights get cold in Dec and Jan
Agra Small airport (AGR); most guests come via Delhi (about 3.5 hours by expressway) Oct to Mar Taj Mahal views from hotels; events are not allowed at the monument itself. Winter fog can delay flights
Goa Two airports: Dabolim (GOI) and Mopa (GOX) Nov to Feb Beach functions need permissions; avoid the June to September monsoon

Jaipur: the easiest choice for large weddings

Jaipur is our home city, so we are biased, but the logistics back it up. It has an international airport, a deep bench of palace hotels and resorts, and enough rooms to keep a 300-guest wedding in one or two properties.

The range is wide. Ayush and Kiritika held their haldi, mehendi, sangeet and wedding all at The Leela Palace Jaipur, so no guest had to step into a car for four days. Sahaj and Shreedhara went the other way and chose Taj Devi Ratn in the Aravalli hills. The stepwell-style courtyards, sandstone walls and terraces became natural stages for each function, and the evening light did a lot of the work that décor would normally do.

Udaipur: lakes, palaces and a slower pace

Udaipur is the most romantic of the Rajasthan cities, and couples feel it the moment they arrive. The trade-off is logistics. The airport is domestic, so most international guests take a connecting flight, and lake venues often mean moving guests by boat on fixed timings.

Shriya and Aditya spent close to a month comparing luxury venues in Udaipur before choosing Mementos by ITC Hotels. Aditya spent part of his childhood in the city, so it had to be Udaipur. They then held the reception separately at a private farm venue in Jaipur. That split is worth considering if you want an intimate destination wedding plus a bigger reception closer to home.

Jodhpur: forts, blue lanes and big evenings

Jodhpur suits couples who want drama: forts lit up at night and palace courtyards with real history. Fort venues can have access rules and time limits, so confirm load-in times for décor and the latest finish for each function before you commit.

Pushkar: small, spiritual and very different

Pushkar works well for intimate weddings with a strong cultural feel. Two things to know early. First, it is a holy town, and meat and alcohol are not served within town limits. If a cocktail night matters to you, look at resorts outside town or plan a dry celebration. Second, rooms disappear during the Pushkar Fair, so check those dates before you shortlist.

Ranthambore: a jungle wedding with safaris for guests

A Ranthambore wedding feels like a private holiday. Guests can take a morning safari and still be back for the haldi. Resorts here are smaller, so a guest list above 150 often spreads across two or three properties, which adds transfers. The core safari zones close in the monsoon, and the nearest major airport is Jaipur, around three hours by road.

Jaisalmer: a desert wedding under the stars

Jaisalmer is for couples who want something guests have never seen before: a sangeet on the dunes, a sandstone fort glowing at sunset, and dinners in luxury desert camps. The catch is access. The airport has limited flights, so many guests fly into Jodhpur and drive around five hours, or take a charter. Large weddings usually combine a heritage hotel with tented camps. Desert nights in December and January are genuinely cold, so plan heaters, shawls and indoor backups for late functions.

Agra: a wedding with the Taj Mahal in view

Agra appeals to international guests who want the Taj Mahal on their trip. Be clear about one thing early: you cannot hold a wedding at the Taj Mahal itself. What you can do is choose a hotel with Taj views for the pheras or a sunrise photoshoot, and plan a guest visit to the monument (note that it is closed on Fridays). Most guests arrive through Delhi, around three and a half hours by expressway. In December and January, morning fog can delay flights and road travel, so build buffer time into arrival days.

Goa: beach weddings done properly

Goa is ideal for relaxed, barefoot celebrations, and with two airports it is easy for guests to reach. November to February is the sweet spot. Beach functions need permissions and must respect music limits. During the monsoon, from June to September, many beach setups simply are not possible.

3. What a Destination Wedding in India Costs in 2027

There is no single price, but there are honest ranges. These are the all-inclusive budget bands we use for Jaipur weddings, based on our own proposals.

Wedding size Guests and days Indicative budget (Jaipur)
Intimate 50 to 100 guests, 2 days from about Rs.1 crore (US$105,000)
Premium 150 to 250 guests, 3 days Rs.3–5 crore (US$315,000–525,000)
Royal 300 to 500 guests, 4 days Rs.7–10 crore (US$725,000–1.05 million)
Ultra-luxe 500+ guests or full property buyout Rs.10 crore and above (US$1.05 million+)

Every IWP proposal is priced venue by venue. You can see the full breakdown on our Jaipur wedding venues with price page.

What moves the number most

  • Date and season. October to March is peak season. A popular muhurat date in December costs more than a weekday in late February.

  • The room block. How many rooms, for how many nights, and in which categories.

  • Buyout or shared property. A full buyout gives you privacy and freedom with timings, at a price.

  • Number of functions. Each function adds food, décor, sound and staff.

  • Décor and production. Stage builds, florals, lighting and LED walls add up quickly.

  • Guest travel. Flights and transfers, especially if you are covering them.

Keep around 10% aside as a contingency. Something always changes: guest numbers, a weather backup, a late addition to the menu.

When you compare quotes, check whether taxes are included. GST on hotel rooms depends on the room tariff, and service charges vary by property. Two quotes that look Rs.20 lakh apart can end up level once taxes are added.

4. Pick the Venue With These Questions in Hand

A beautiful venue that cannot handle your guest list or your schedule will cost you more in fixes than it saves. Ask these before you pay a deposit:

  • Is this a full buyout, or will other guests be on the property?

  • How many rooms can you hold for all our nights, in which categories?

  • When do unsold rooms go back, and what is the attrition penalty if we release them?

  • Which vendors are in-house or empanelled? Is there a fee to bring in our own decorator, caterer or sound team?

  • What is the music cut-off for outdoor functions? Loudspeakers in open spaces generally have to stop between 10 pm and 6 am, so plan an indoor after-party if your sangeet runs late.

  • Who arranges permissions for the bar licence, fireworks and the baraat (horse, band, procession route)?

  • What is the indoor backup for each outdoor function if it rains or gets too hot?

  • What are the minimum spend, payment schedule and cancellation terms? Get them in writing.

Ask for a proposal that lists room rates, venue charges, food packages and taxes separately. A single package figure makes it hard to compare venues fairly.

5. Hire a Planner Who Knows That City

Planning a wedding in another city, or from another country, means coordinating a venue, 15 to 25 vendors, a room block and a few hundred guests at once. A planner turns that into one point of contact and one budget sheet.

What a good destination planner does that you cannot easily do yourself:

  • Negotiates room blocks and venue terms, because they bring the hotel repeat business.

  • Visits venues for you and shares honest walkthroughs, not just brochure photos.

  • Knows which local vendors turn up on time and which ones the venue will not allow.

  • Runs the on-ground team that handles arrivals, transfers, function changeovers and the inevitable last-minute problem.

How to vet a planner: ask for weddings they have done in your city, ideally at your shortlisted venue. Ask who will actually be on the ground during the wedding week. Ask to see a sample itemised budget. If they cannot show you one, that tells you how your money will be tracked.

6. A Realistic Planning Timeline

For a large wedding on a popular date, start 12 to 18 months out. Smaller weddings can move faster. Shriya, who married at Mementos Udaipur, advises couples to start six to seven months ahead and settle the big decisions early. That works well when the guest list is manageable and the family decides quickly.

12 to 18 months before

  • Agree on guest count, days and budget.

  • Check 2027 muhurat dates and shortlist two or three destinations.

  • Appoint your planner and do venue visits (in person or by video).

  • Confirm the venue and room block.

8 to 12 months before

  • Lock the photographer, décor team and entertainment.

  • Send save-the-dates with city, dates and nearest airport.

  • Decide the theme and mood for each function.

  • Start outfits, especially if you are ordering from designers.

4 to 8 months before

  • Finalise menus, layouts and the function schedule.

  • Collect guest arrival details and build the rooming list.

  • Plan transfers, welcome kits and the hospitality desk.

  • Send invitations.

1 to 3 months before

  • Confirm final numbers, rooming and dietary needs.

  • Confirm backup plans for every outdoor function.

  • Run a full coordination meeting with the venue and vendors.

  • Share a guest itinerary with timings, dress codes and contacts.

Wedding week

  • Airport welcome and check-ins.

  • Venue walkthrough and sound and lighting checks before each function.

  • Daily briefings with the venue and vendor leads.

  • One person, ideally your planner, handles every problem so the family does not have to.

7. Give Every Function Its Own Mood

A multi-day wedding works best when each event feels different but they still belong together. Shriya and Aditya’s wedding at Mementos Udaipur is a good example. Five functions, five moods, one venue:

  • Sangeet, "An Evening in Udaipur": soft florals and an easy, breezy elegance.

  • Haldi, "A Burst of Sunshine": vivid yellows and marigolds.

  • Varmala: a Rajputana theme with rich colours and traditional motifs.

  • Wedding: a South Indian temple setting, with traditional rituals, outfits and a South Indian feast. The couple called it their favourite.

  • Cocktail night: pure high-energy dancing.

Two lessons from that wedding. A Rajasthan venue can host a South Indian ceremony beautifully if the planning respects both traditions. And themes give your décor team, caterer and guests a clear brief for each day.

Sahaj and Shreedhara’s wedding shows the opposite approach. They picked a venue whose architecture already looked the part and kept décor light. If your venue has strong character, let it carry the look and spend the savings on guest experience.

Think beyond décor too: a welcome dinner with local food, a folk performance, a morning safari or a city walk for guests who arrive early. These are what guests remember and talk about later.

8. Planning From Abroad: Extra Steps for NRI and International Couples

More than half of the planning can happen over video calls. The rest needs a team on the ground you trust. We have written detailed guides for couples planning from the USA, the UK, Canada, the UAE and the Gulf, Australia, and Singapore and Malaysia. The essentials:

  • Fix a weekly call slot that suits both time zones, and keep every quote, approval and payment in one shared tracker.

  • Ask for live video walkthroughs of the actual rooms and lawns, at the time of day your function will happen.

  • Plan one in-person trip if you can, ideally 8 to 12 months out, to see your final two venues and meet key vendors.

  • Brief guests early on the nearest airport, connecting flights, visas and what to pack. Most foreign guests can use India’s e-Visa. OCI cardholders do not need a visa.

  • Agree on currency and payment schedules before signing. Check how GST is shown on each invoice.

Legal marriage in India: what to know

A wedding celebration and a legally registered marriage are two different things. Many NRI couples marry legally in their country of residence and hold the full celebration in India. If you do want to register in India:

  • Both partners Hindu (including Sikh, Jain and Buddhist): the marriage can be performed under the Hindu Marriage Act and then registered.

  • Interfaith couples, or one partner a foreign national: registration is usually under the Special Marriage Act. One partner must have lived in the district for 30 days before filing notice, and a 30-day notice period follows. Plan for roughly two months in India.

  • Using the certificate abroad: it usually needs an apostille from India’s Ministry of External Affairs.

Rules depend on your nationality and situation, so confirm with the local marriage registrar or a lawyer before you book dates around it.

9. Seasons and 2027 Wedding Dates

In Rajasthan, October to March is peak wedding season. The weather is pleasant, the light is beautiful, and the best venues book out first. April to September brings lower rates, but May and June regularly cross 40°C in Jaipur, and July to September is monsoon. If you go off-season, plan indoor or evening functions.

Many families also follow muhurat dates. Traditionally there are few or no Hindu wedding dates during Chaturmas, the four-month period that usually runs from around July to November. That pushes demand into the remaining winter dates. See our list of auspicious Hindu wedding dates in 2027 and share your preferred dates with your planner on the first call.

A useful trick: ask venues to quote for your preferred date and two nearby alternatives. Shifting by a few days, or from a weekend to a weekday, sometimes opens up a venue that looked fully booked.

10. Six Mistakes We See Every Season

  • Budgeting for the venue, not the wedding. Rooms, taxes, transfers and extra functions are where budgets slip.

  • Falling for a venue that cannot sleep your guests. Splitting guests across three hotels adds transfers, staff and cost.

  • Not asking about outside vendors. Finding out after booking that your decorator is not allowed in is expensive.

  • Planning a late outdoor sangeet with no indoor plan. Music rules and weather do not bend for weddings.

  • Leaving older guests out of the logistics. Long walks, stairs, boat transfers and late nights hit grandparents hardest.

  • Too many decision-makers. Pick one person from each family who signs off. Everything moves faster.

Why Couples Choose Indian Wedding Planners

We have spent 13 years doing this, across more than 250 weddings and 13 destinations in India and abroad, with offices in Jaipur and Mumbai. We know the venues from the inside: their room counts, their vendor rules, their quiet corners for a photoshoot, and their back entrances for a 3 am décor change.

Our recent weddings, including Shriya and Aditya’s at Mementos Udaipur and Sahaj and Shreedhara’s at Taj Devi Ratn, Jaipur, have been featured on WeddingSutra.

Every proposal we send is priced venue by venue, so you see exactly where your money goes before you commit.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a destination wedding in India cost in 2027?

In Jaipur, our all-inclusive budgets start from about Rs.1 crore for an intimate wedding of 50 to 100 guests over two days, and run Rs.3 to 5 crore for 150 to 250 guests over three days. Larger weddings of 300 to 500 guests usually fall between Rs.7 and 10 crore. Guest count, dates and the room block move the number most.

How far in advance should we start planning?

For a large wedding on a popular date, 12 to 18 months. Smaller weddings can be planned in six to seven months if the venue is available and decisions are made quickly.

Which is the best destination for a wedding in India?

For large guest lists, Jaipur is usually the easiest: an international airport and a wide choice of big properties. Udaipur suits couples who want lakeside romance and can manage boat and flight connections. Goa is best for relaxed beach weddings between November and February. Pushkar and Ranthambore suit smaller, more intimate weddings. Jaisalmer is the pick for a desert wedding, and Agra for couples who want the Taj Mahal as part of the guest experience.

What is the best month for a destination wedding in India?

November to February is the most comfortable across Rajasthan and Goa. October and March also work in Rajasthan. Avoid May and June in Rajasthan because of the heat, and the June to September monsoon in Goa.

Can NRI couples plan a wedding in India without travelling often?

Yes. Most planning can happen over video calls and shared trackers. We recommend one in-person visit, around 8 to 12 months before the wedding, to see your final venues and meet key vendors.

Can a foreign national legally marry in India?

Yes, usually under the Special Marriage Act. One partner must have lived in the district for 30 days before giving notice, followed by a 30-day notice period. Many couples marry legally abroad and hold the celebration in India instead. Check with the local registrar or a lawyer for your situation.

Can the wedding and reception be in different cities?

Yes. Shriya and Aditya held their wedding at Mementos Udaipur and their reception at a private farm venue in Jaipur. It works well when you want an intimate destination wedding and a bigger reception closer to home.
